1. Title: The Use of Landmines by Alejandra Galindo
2. The approach the author used in the intro paragraph is Descriptive
3. Thesis statement : Antipersonnel landmines do not recognize a cease fire; they continue killing or maiming for many years after the conflict is over.
4. I believe the intro was effective because it was explaining how antipersonnel landmines kill innoncent civilians even after the conflict is over. Antipersonnel landmines were supposed to be used for the war to kill the terrorist and enemies. But instead even years after the conflict was over it is killing innoncent people, terrorizing civilians and transforming agricultual fields into killing fields. And de-mining is a very slow and very slow and very expensive process. Landminds make it very difficult for people to go back to their home cities and villiages.
5. The conclusion it used the method of called to action.
6. The conclusion was effective to me because it explains how we should ban landmines because it makes the recovery process for countries that have suffered a war in their own land extremely difficult to cope with. It is also a very expensive thing to try to remove the landmines putting a econmic burden. It also talks about how the US should sign the Mine Ban Treaty now instead of waiting for more advance weapon technology. They should consider about the civilians as well because they are the ones that are suffering these mines even after the conflict is now over. Innocent people are dying because of this.

Essay #1
1. Title : The desired look : Nothing but bones. Author : Rebecca Patton
2. Intro approach was Description.
3. Thesis Statement : Females are trying diets ts and are exercising like it is a competition to see who can lose the most weight the quickest.
4. I believe the introduction paragraph was effective because it explained how girls are trying to change their lifestyle to become a model. "Females are trying diets and exercising like it is a competition to see who can lose the most weight the quickest." Girls are going to the beyond to try to fit this look as the "models." Now it is a problem to these girls because the ones that have been trying to be "thin" for a while now, has developed an eating disorder to try to deal with their lack of self-esteem or other related problems.
5. Conclusion paragraph used suggestion.
6. The conclusion was effective to me because it summarized up what they talked about in the essay. It talked about eating disorders and what the girls are doing is an major thing that causes it. They are willing to starve themselves to death for a little satisfaction on the outside. All they look forward to is to look thin like the super models that are on TV, and are willing to go to the extreme to try to fit that image.

Class Assignment Pg. 303 #4
Of course every kids dream is to be famous one day when they grow up. It can be doing with anything along the lines of playing sports, playing and instrument, dancing, or maybe be known for being the #1 singer. Of course with ups there are also going to be some downs. If you are famous and rich, you would have tons and tons of people that will look up to you and like you as an artist or a celebrity. And being rich and buying anything you want. From cars to houses, toys, clothes. You would be able to get anything you want. That would be the nice and good part about it, the downside would be that u would have no privacy. Privacy is a big thing for some people, and if you are famous you would have none. The media would always want to know what you have been up to. For example, Britney spears was America's sweetheart, until she got famous and didn't know what to spend the money on. So she turned to drugs and that just messed everything up. It's not always a good thing to be famous and be known.

Class Assignment #3 Pg. 291
I really enjoy playing football and basketball. Sports is not only fun, but it is also very good exercises for people. Me and my buddies would get together on weekends and we would shoot hoops or might even play some football at the local park or school. Football is one of the top sports America watches behind soccer. Millions would sit and watch the game, for example Monday Night Footbal. I enjoy playing sports because its fun while your doing it, and on weekends I would love to sit there and watch sports clips off of ESPN. ESPN is where they update you on the games that had been recently played for example, that week. That is just as fun to me as actual playing the game if I got the chance to just watch it. One time I went skiing in Lake Tahoe and I loved it. It was my family's first time and we all had so much fun. We were all new so we decided to get lessons for it instead of jumping right into it. I really enjoyed it because it was something different from anything I have done before. I was more scared that anything while we were skiing, and we got the chance to play with snow while we were practicing.
Class Assignment #2 Pg. 278
A lot of people probably do not understand the whole concept of wanting and getting a tattoo, especially if they do not have one themselves. There are numerous reasons why one may want to get a tattoo but to be honest every person's reason is unique. I like art such as tattoos and piercings. I have both my ears pierced and two tattoos, one on each of my arm. On the left side of my arm there is a tattoo of 5 cards symbolizing about the game called poker. I have been playing poker for years now, maybe about 5 or 6 years to be exact. I enjoyed it so much now it is a part of me. On my right side of my arm there is a tattoo of a tribal design that I had got the idea off of the Internet. I just like the idea of having a tattoo a while back ago, and i just went out and got it done. My ear piercings had been done a while ago since I was in middle school. People tend to get tattoos or body art because sometimes that's how they express themselves, for example a lot of people like to get a tattoo to remind them of some stage in their life or to help them remember something special or important that has happened to them.
Class assignment Cultural Background #1
My cultural background is from Vietnam. Vietnam occupies approximately 127,243 square miles (329,560 square kilometers), an area roughly equivalent to New Mexico. Both of my parents were born and raised over there. Vietnamese people have lots of stuff they do traditionally that they would follow. Being very family oriented is a major thing, especially for the holidays. We would all get together just to get together. The biggest thing we celebrate would be Tet (Vietnamese New Year). Around that time of year which should fall between late January or early February. It gets really crazy but fun, we would celebrate it by have tons of food, family gatherings, presents, and much more. It is known because of the red envelop that we used to put money into to give to each other. It is usually the adults the ones that are handing the red envelopes out for their little nieces and nephews. I enjoy those time when they come around, because I get to see all my family members I didn't get to see in a while. Vietnamese Culture also have a different tasting for food as well. Our types of food that we have and eat, some are different from others. Takes a little while to get use to eating it because some has an acquire taste for it.

16 Classic essays #2
1.The title of this essay is gifts. The author is Ralph Waldo Emerson.
2.The method the author used is an opposing position in his introductory paragraph. For example, IT is said that the world is in a state of bankruptcy, that the world owes the world more than the world can pay, and ought to go into chancery, and be sold. I do not think this general insolvency, which involves in some sort all the population, to be the reason of the difficulty experienced at Christman and New Year, and other times, in bestowing gifts; since it is always so pleasant to be generous, though very vexatious to pay debts.
3.The thesis statement in the essay was, for common gifts, necessity makes pertinences and beauty every day, and one is glad when an imperative leaves him no option, since if the man at the door have no shoes, you have not to consider whether you could procure him a paint-box.
4.The introductory paragraph in this essay was good. The author simply talks about what would be good gifts. He uses flowers and fruits for an example, "Flowers and fruits are always fit presents; flowers, because they are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world." I liked this one because he explains how fruits and flowers are good gifts when u have no idea what to get a person.
5.The author used a call to action to conclude the essay.
6.This essay was effective to me. The author used good details and examples to help understand what he is saying. "The best of hospitality and of generosity is also not in the will, but in fate."

16 Classic essays from well known writers #1
1. The title of this essay is The Ephemera: An Emblem of Human Life. The author is Benjamin Franklin.
2. The approach the writer used in the introductory paragraph would be a surprising statement. "We had been shown numberless skeletons of a kind of little fly, called an ephemera, whose successive generations, we were told, were bred and expired within the day. I happened to see a living company of them on a leaf, who appeared to be engaged in conversation."
3. The thesis statement would be "We had been shown numberless skeletons of a kind of little fly, called an ephemera, whose successive generations, we were told, were bred and expired within the day."
4. I personally dont think the introduction was very effective, because I really didnt get the message that they were trying to imply with the paragraph. I had to read it a several times to get it. The author tho did used a lot of details to help picture what had happened in the story. After reading it a several times I finally understood it. Another thing that the author used in the essay that helps the reader to get the message is he used personal experience. Which we all can relate to.
5. The method the author used for the concluding paragraph is quotation.
6. The conclusion was pretty good to me. It was a lot more effective then the introduction. He started to give more facts on what he was talking about. For example "I have seen generations born, flourish, and expire." He pretty much talks about the mosquito's life known as ephemera. How they can only survive only up to 18 hours. They are bred and expired within the same day. The live in this world known as Moulin Joly.

Response to Obama's Speech
Obama would be a great President, because he is very inspiring and intelligent. He said that we can rebuild this nation by not doing stuff alone, but to do stuff and help each other while doing it. "So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, or responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other." Not to see others as enemies but to see them as friends. Obama is actually going to listen to the people and give them what they need. Rather than wasting a bunch of money for example, sending more troops and or weapons and such overseas for war. When we need it most right here. Overall I think he would be an excellent leader.

JOURNAL AND PORTFOLIO WRITING
I chose to write about "Anything related to your personal life, such as your feelings about your career goals, personal problems and solutions, opinions about your college courses, reflections about past and future decisions, or feelings about your job." I decided to go to Western Career College rather than joining the Military. It was either or for me and i stuck with schooling. I came into here as a Phramacy Tech branch, and so far i like it alot. I've been out of school for four years and just not getting back to it. Hopefully when I'm done il get a nice job at a hospital maybe even at Kaiser. I currently work at a Chinese Restuarant and i really dont like it. But its okay for the mean while just making enough money to pay my bills. Until i graduate and get a real job with benefits.

Goals for the class
First of all my main goal is to pass the class with a good grade. In order to do so I would attend class everyday. Second of all i would like to improve my writing skills such as doing an essay, and in order to do so I would have to do all of my homework. Which I think would really help. Third of all I would like to improve my vocabulary skills, to do so I would have to practice using bigger words. I'm not sure which topic I'm going to use yet out of the 5 choices for the SLO topic. My choices are:
1. Currently we have several equally qualified candidates for this job. What makes you the best fit for us?
2. Should the death penalty be an option for certain crimes, or should it be abolished in favor of life in prison without possibility of parole?
3. What is the greatest challenge of the health care industry today, why?
4. The world could easily sustain more people. Do you agree or disagree?
5. Experimenting on animals is necessary and justifiable. Do you agree or disagree?

What Conflict Management style do u use
I think the style i use most is sometimes avoidance. And at other times i like to use collaboration because u both will get something out of it on both sides. Win-Win situation. Or i would go the other way and choose avoidance because sometimes i just dont want to deal with the problem, and i would just be silent or just brush it off. I think its pretty effective with both kind of ways, depending on the situation.

Listening test
I scored a 59 on the Mental Attentiveness for the listening test. I guess that means im some what attentive to people if im doing other stuff. When i try to learn stuff i have to be just doing that one thing if im trying to get the stuff. "You responses indicate that your mental attentiveness is generally good, but needs to be improved. During conversations, you sometimes have difficulty fully attending to a speaker, and may occasionally find your mind wandering. Good listeners will try to find at least one thing remotely interesting about a dull topic instead of zoning out or simply pretending to be interested. They also know how to keep their focus centered on the speaker, no matter how strong the temptation to daydream. Keep in mind that if you are not fully attuned to a conversation, you may end up missing out on a lot of important information, which, in some cases, can have rather embarrassing results!"
