1.The title of this essay is gifts. The author is Ralph Waldo Emerson.
2.The method the author used is an opposing position in his introductory paragraph. For example, IT is said that the world is in a state of bankruptcy, that the world owes the world more than the world can pay, and ought to go into chancery, and be sold. I do not think this general insolvency, which involves in some sort all the population, to be the reason of the difficulty experienced at Christman and New Year, and other times, in bestowing gifts; since it is always so pleasant to be generous, though very vexatious to pay debts.
3.The thesis statement in the essay was, for common gifts, necessity makes pertinences and beauty every day, and one is glad when an imperative leaves him no option, since if the man at the door have no shoes, you have not to consider whether you could procure him a paint-box.
4.The introductory paragraph in this essay was good. The author simply talks about what would be good gifts. He uses flowers and fruits for an example, "Flowers and fruits are always fit presents; flowers, because they are a proud assertion that a ray of beauty outvalues all the utilities of the world." I liked this one because he explains how fruits and flowers are good gifts when u have no idea what to get a person.
5.The author used a call to action to conclude the essay.
6.This essay was effective to me. The author used good details and examples to help understand what he is saying. "The best of hospitality and of generosity is also not in the will, but in fate."

Response to Obama's Speech
Obama would be a great President, because he is very inspiring and intelligent. He said that we can rebuild this nation by not doing stuff alone, but to do stuff and help each other while doing it. "So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, or responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other." Not to see others as enemies but to see them as friends. Obama is actually going to listen to the people and give them what they need. Rather than wasting a bunch of money for example, sending more troops and or weapons and such overseas for war. When we need it most right here. Overall I think he would be an excellent leader.

JOURNAL AND PORTFOLIO WRITING
I chose to write about "Anything related to your personal life, such as your feelings about your career goals, personal problems and solutions, opinions about your college courses, reflections about past and future decisions, or feelings about your job." I decided to go to Western Career College rather than joining the Military. It was either or for me and i stuck with schooling. I came into here as a Phramacy Tech branch, and so far i like it alot. I've been out of school for four years and just not getting back to it. Hopefully when I'm done il get a nice job at a hospital maybe even at Kaiser. I currently work at a Chinese Restuarant and i really dont like it. But its okay for the mean while just making enough money to pay my bills. Until i graduate and get a real job with benefits.

Goals for the class
First of all my main goal is to pass the class with a good grade. In order to do so I would attend class everyday. Second of all i would like to improve my writing skills such as doing an essay, and in order to do so I would have to do all of my homework. Which I think would really help. Third of all I would like to improve my vocabulary skills, to do so I would have to practice using bigger words. I'm not sure which topic I'm going to use yet out of the 5 choices for the SLO topic. My choices are:
1. Currently we have several equally qualified candidates for this job. What makes you the best fit for us?
2. Should the death penalty be an option for certain crimes, or should it be abolished in favor of life in prison without possibility of parole?
3. What is the greatest challenge of the health care industry today, why?
4. The world could easily sustain more people. Do you agree or disagree?
5. Experimenting on animals is necessary and justifiable. Do you agree or disagree?
